October 1 – After officials determine that there is no longer a wartime threat to Washington, DC, the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution are placed back in the “shrine” for public display.

October 30 – The ballet Appalachian Spring, commissioned by the Library’s Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge Fund, premiers in the Library’s Coolidge Auditorium, with a performance by the Martha Graham Dance Company. Graham choreographed the work to music by Aaron Copland.

102. This is a scene from the world premier of Appalachian Spring, choreographed by Martha Graham with music by Aaron Copland, performed in the Coolidge Auditorium on October 30, 1944 (bottom). As a tribute to their founder and the Library, the Martha Graham Dance Company recreated the work in the Coolidge Auditorium in 2016 (top).
